It is with great regret and also due to unforeseen circumstances the KW LInuxfest 2018 planned for May 12th is now cancelled for this year. It is hoped that plans for a KW Linuxfest 2019 will work next year.

Just in case you have missed it, the latest version 6 of Mageia was been released July 16. This release is the newest in the long line of Mageia releases since its appearance in September 2010. Mageia Linux was forked from the then Mandriva Linux where the vast majority of the previous Mandriva developers decided it was time to set out on their own path and remove itself from the then Mandriva corporate umbrella. Thus was born Mageia Linux.

As of 03 August ... LibreOffice v.5.3.5 is available for download. If you have not as of yet done the update of this newest version of the "Still" version of the suite, you may want to do so as it comes with some bug fixes that may be of interest to you. ...

The Zikula group announces the most recent  releases of versions 1.3.12 and 1.4.5. This is a security release that follows the recent release of newer versions of Zikula. The Zikula team advises everyone to update as soon as possible.

From a recent article on the Mageia Linux Blog site, new Mageia ISO's for version 5.1. This version incorporates all of the updates applied to version 5.0 over the last half year or so. This is just to tide us over while we await the upcoming Mageia v.6.0 which is presently at the testing phase. No clear release date for Mageia v.6.0 has been announced as of yet.

A Community Driven Office Suite Project

Looking for the perfect office suite for your upcoming term work? Have a peek at LibreOffice from The Document Foundation. LibreOffice is a worldwide community driven project with the aim of creating an office suite compatible with international ISO file format standards. Over the last sixteen years, LibreOffice has had help from over 900 developers with the maintenance of its code base and also has hundreds of volunteers helping with its "Get Help" channels (mailing list and forums), documentation (text books and online documentation) and its +100 translations. LibreOffice comes with 5 recognizable modules: "Writer"; "Calc"; "Impress" (presentation-slide module); "Draw"; "Base"; "Math" with compatibility for many MS file formats AND is even able to import multitudes of additional files of various formats.

And all of this for FREE! ...

A big month for the Zikula group with the release of both Zikula 1.4.0 and Zikula 1.3.10. Zikula v.1.3.10 addresses some bug fixes and other tidbits while v.1.4.0 is setting the stage for the larger transition to v.2.0.0 which is in the works.

In the meantime, some of the 1.3.x modules work on v.1.4.0 but not all.

Here are the steps to access the LibreOffice IRC chat

1. Use your packager to install Pidgin if it is not installed.
     
2. If you do not have an account set up already, Pidgin will start with this window and choose "Add"
   (*** if you are already using Pidgin for chatting, go to "Accounts->Manage" and the Accounts window will appear and choose "Add" ***)
   
   
    
3. You will now see this  "Add Acount"  window. Click on the Protocol drop down window and choose "irc".
   You will notice that it automatically inserts the "irc.freenode.net" in the "server" field.
   Type your name (or the name you want people to see in chat mode) into the "Username" field.
   The "Username" can either be your real name or any other name.
   
   
   
    
4. Your  "Add Account"  window should now look like this. Leave the other fields blank and choose "Add".
   
   
   
    
5. A new "Buddy List" window appears. Pidgin will now look like this. Choose "Buddies->Add Chat".
   
   
   
    
6. A new "Add Chat"  window appears. Choose "Account" drop down window and in the list choose  "Tim@irc.freenode.net (IRC).
   Choose "Channel" and type "#documentfoundation" in the field. Leave all else blank.
   
   
   
    
7. The "Buddy List " window should now look like this. Double-click on the "#documentfoundation"
   and this will log you into the documentfoundation irc chat room.
   
   
   
    
8. A new window appears with the name of your chat channel at the top (in this case #documentfoundation).
   Your Pidgin should look like this. As you can see the list of participants is showing on the right hand side
   and you have a small window at the bottom where you can type your message.
   Feel free to try it out even if we are not there.
   Just give a warning message that you are just trying our the irc chat channel and practising a bit.
   
   
   
    
9. If you have any problems, ask on the chat channel and people will respond in kindness.
   Once you are done your session, just exit out of Pidgin, close all windows.
   Notice that Pidgin will remain in your bottom task bar.
   To close Pidgin down completely, right-click on the Pidgin icon in your taskbar and choose "Quit"

Mageia v.5 is out. With a longer wait than usual, but worth the wait, the 5th version of this Linux distribution is out. Mageia Linux continues with strong community support and strong download numbers. A big round or congratulations go to the Mageia team who have again put out a most viable option to those who would like to work at their computers without constraints of daily virus or malware/spyware checks. This installation is still one of the best on the Linux distribution list and if you need support at the installation phase, the Mageia community will gladly help.
